TCI Powder Coatings is proud to support the next generation of powder coating professionals in partnership with the Powder Coating Institute (PCI) Scholarship Program.

TCI has awarded two $2,500 scholarships to local Ellaville residents Wyatt Ellingson, a senior Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Georgia, and Tyler Black, a sophomore Chemistry major at Georgia Southwestern. The scholarships, made possible by a donation from TCI Powder Coatings to the PCI, support students pursuing careers in the powder coating industry and help foster the next generation of technical talent.

For Tyler Black, this scholarship opportunity enhanced awareness of opportunities in the field of chemistry and industrial finishing locally, something TCI aims continuously to raise awareness in the community.

Tyler details his interest in chemistry as one with a solid answer, “that is neither guesswork or philosophical. The answers are more grounded in the material world and can be detected with equipment.” He cites that interning would familiarize himself with testing equipment and techniques that could assist long-term.

“I am honored to have received this scholarship, and it means so much to me,” says Black. “This scholarship allows me the opportunity to go away for college and study in a field [chemistry] where I wouldn’t have to worry about the financial aspect and can instead worry about myself and my future.”

For Wyatt, the powder coating industry is more than just a career path, it’s part of his family legacy. Growing up with both parents working in the industry and interning with TCI over his summers, he gained early exposure to both the technical and practical sides of the business citing to learn from those who are seasoned in the industry.

“They’ve likely come across and solved every problem you could encounter and have more insight than you could ever know what to do with. They are invaluable tools you should use to the fullest extent while they’re available to you.

Ellingson has interned with TCI’s engineering department throughout his summer breaks, gaining hands-on experience while supporting training development, part tracking, and day-to-day plant operations. The role has deepened his interest in mechanical systems and confirmed his desire to work in the powder coating field.

Wyatt first discovered his passion for engineering through Ag Mechanics courses in high school and has since excelled in thermodynamics and machine design at UGA.

“My favorite aspect of mechanical engineering is how diverse it is. As one of the largest disciplines within engineering, mechanical engineers must draw from a vast field of knowledge when designing, troubleshooting, and creating,” he shared. “I believe powder coating is very similar in that aspect as there are so many little things that must come together perfectly to deliver the high-quality product that customers expect.”

He also cited UGA’s College of Engineering and the unique atmosphere of Athens as key reasons for choosing the school.
